Ignacio “Nacho” Szulga is a bass player and composer born in 1990. He has a degree in musical composition from UCA and a jazz bass degree in Conservatorio Superior Manuel de Falla. He is nowadays dedicated to composing and playing both traditional and modern jazz and improvised/ creative music. He played in Camila Nebbia sextet and Pia Hernandez trio and quintet, Jazz at The Movies, Matias Dabanch cuarteto. He participated in the Buenos Aires jazz festival and played in many of the most important venues in Buenos Aires such as CCK, Usina del Arte, Thelonious club, and recently in Teatro Colon with Valentin Garvie in the Gandini band.

Entramados Homeostáticos (or “Homeostatic Entanglements”) is born in a series of trips that Nacho did in 2019. On one side he worked on a cruise ship for half a year and on the other side, later went to New York to participate in the School for Improvisational Music Summer Program directed by Ralph Alessi. All these experiences inspired Nacho to start making some music exercises trying to generate different structures working with counterpoint with two and three voices for jazz ensemble.

This music is also a reaction to Nacho’s previous work: VASA (TVL REC). This album was focused on composing for a larger ensemble, which allowed several explorations regarding texture and orchestration. It focused mostly on composition and not improvisation. The music of his newest, Entramados Homeostaticos, offers a simpler orchestration allowing it to be interpreted even by a duo or trio and the space is there for further exploration.

To achieve this goal Nacho gathered some of his friends with which he has worked before, especially in Pia Hernandez Trio and Plevida. Beyond the smaller composed part of the music, nobody received any specific guideline regarding the musical interpretation. During improvisation, the goal was to reach a place of high intensity, and the trust and hearing between the band are what made that possible, giving also coherence and cohesion to the record.

‘Homeostasis’ is the capacity of living beings to maintain a stable inner state when interacting with the outer world. One of the most common issues that jazz musicians have to face when composing is that improvisation itself has a disruptive germ that allows music to achieve high intensity and surprise but at the same time can end up destroying the original composition. The work of a composer/improviser is to create entanglements that propose a space to the players to transit through, and these structures should endure the energy of the improvisation maintaining the same scent. In this work, Nacho used counterpoint structures to fulfill the homeostasis which is not more than the balance between composition and improvisation, between the rational and the intuitive.
